Bought a Victoria Plum tree today, which I shall plant on sunday. So in total I have a apple and plum tree. A blueberry, logan berry, gooseberry and rasberru bushes. We also grew rhubarb, peppers, chillis, and tomatoes this year. The berry produce was poor save for the blueberry bush, mainly because I had cut back the plants and cut off last years wood, which is where the fruit grows the following year! Not very clever. So this winter I'm not cutting or trimming anything back, so next summer we may get a better crop.
I am also trying to plant plants that encourage lots of insects, bees and birds to our garden. We are also organic and have been for three summers now, no nasty sprays or powders. Fertiliser is fish bone & blood, and we feed the plants on liquid feed produced by our two wormeries, ie its worm poo. It stinks abominably but it does seem to have a dramatic effect on plant life.
Next spring I'm planting a English cottage garden flower strip with seeds specially designed to attract bees. Bees are my favourite insect, and are quite fascinating. Bombus are eggs, then larvae then transmognify into the tiny furry flying machine we know. They shouldn't even be able to fly as the wings do not creat sufficient lift, but they do.
I'm also going to buy some insect boxes to go with my bird and bee boxes. Trying to see if I can get a bat box, but she isnt too keen on the idea. Shall keep trying.
I like our garden and it brings me great pleasure, as it is literally a living evolving project. The more life and colour we bring the better.
